family&counseling: The clients we need

We get the clients we need --- Camille Spitzley

Oh, Camille, your theory proves truer everyday. Let's look at my two clients today. The first was dealing with the loss of her step-father. The second could have been my father. He's four days younger than my dad, and has substance abuse issues. His oldest child is just a few months older than me.

Holy countertransference issues, batman.

This is going to be an amazing experience for me. I'm going to have to evaluate each therapeutic motive to see if I'm acting in my client's interest, or reacting as my father's son.

Yeah, I'm going to be a kick ass counselor after this. Or a pile of steaming poo.

There are lots of days I worry I'm turning into the pile of steaming poo rather than the kick ass counselor. But I've been blessed with the clients that I need, the internship that I need, and all the supervision that I need to grow fully into myself as a counselor and a person.

Though you would appreciate knowing you're not alone.
