music: How do I love thee, Alanis?

Alanis released an iTunes exclusive album yesterday (which I will be buying next payday), which contains four or five acoustic versions of her songs, with commentary before each one (which you can only get if you buy the whole album!).

I couldn't wait, and had to purchase the acoustic version of Ironic. I was listening to it on the way to internship and, when I got to my favorite lyric . . .

it's like meeting the man of my dreams, and then meeting his beautiful (pause) husband

This made my day

So, Stewart, what's the big deal?
This is the song lyric that started my fascination with Alanis. Before Ironic got radio play, and the world became thoroughly sick of it, this was MY SONG, and this lyric was the reason why. It was a perfect summation of my irritation with being attracted to straight men. To me, it is still the lousiest feeling in the world to be attracted to or in love with someone who will never love you back. Sigh.

To have this lyric take on a new wrinkle, one that makes it even more relevant to my life, tickles me.

I don't know when it happened, but Alanis has become one of THOSE artists in my life, a defining experience, part of my schematic world view. I needed to replace Madonna, now that she's gone weird, and Janet Jackson was getting kind of lonely (can't really think of anyone else who has achieved this level of significance (other than Sondheim, anyway)) all by herself.

I'm one step closer to my CAC-1! Plus, I can now administer certain Substance Abuse assessments all by myself. Who wants to talk to me about their drug problem?
