Faith +1 travels south

Well, Broomfield is the south end of town, anyway. This week, we checked out the Mount Pleasant Community Church. I want to say nice things, but really, it was everything I find distasteful about modern christianity.

atmosphere-less of a chapel, more of a concert hall. It had a better lighting system than the casino entertainment hall. Seriously. The dramatic, lit from below by bluish light, cross and white drapes creeped me out.

music-not too bad. The lead, mic-holding singers started strong, but you could tell that a couple of the songs weren't really ready for debut. They started the service with contemporary stuff, but had a more traditional song during communion; it was nice to mix it up.

the service, part I - They had a new youth minister coming on staff, and they spent a really long time introducing him and his wife, asking them questions about how they became excited about god and ministry. I couldn't shake the eerie resemblance to Donahue or Leno. Caller, you're on the air.

the service, the sequel: the real sermon, I think - The topic was about evangelism and being a contagious christian. It was entirely informational, no inspiration, no guidance. It turns out that they teach this topic in a seminar format, too, and the sermon felt just like a class.

the minister - eh. He seems like a nice enough guy, but I didn't feel drawn to him. Maybe it was just the material for the day.

overall - I was unmoved. The diversity was better than first church, but I didn't find anything there that would compel me to return.

When I asked her, she commented more on the other activities the church has, groups and activities for adults. She seemed to like the other church's sermon better, but felt better about this church than I did.
